i’d go for a lighter color like say honey blonde.
Very light brown. or even blonde!

but dark hair on dark skin doesnt mesh well for me.

I think it would work, but my best suggestion would be either going for a yellowish tone or going for an auburn

I understand highlights and lowlights but asian skin color goes perfectly with whatever your skin color is.

I normally dont care much for that color but i think it would look great on that color of skin. You can always dye it black or brown a few days later if you dont like it. Dye it on a friday so you can have it fixed before you go back to school or work Monday.
